Dusk to Dawn Light Bulb – Installation & Troubleshooting Guide

Dusk to Dawn bulbs are truly remarkable and user-friendly lighting options, thanks to their built-in light sensors. They’re designed to automatically switch the bulb on as soon as darkness sets in and turn it off when brightness returns. This means they operate in a way that sets them apart from regular light bulbs, offering you not only convenience but also the added benefit of energy efficiency. So, if you’re looking for a smart and eco-friendly lighting solution, Dusk to Dawn bulbs are an excellent choice.

Installation

When installing the dusk to dawn bulbs in your outdoor fixture – make sure that the light sensor is exposed to ambient light. Screw the bulb into the socket and turn the switch on. Keep the light switch on at all times to ensure proper operation of the bulbs. Keep the switch on after you install the bulb in your fixture. The bulb needs continuous power to function correctly. The built-in sensor is responsible for turning the light on and off.

If you are going to install the bulb into an enclosed fixture you need to be sure that the sensor is exposed to natural light. Frosted glass on your enclosed fixtures may cause the bulbs to not function properly.

Installing the bulbs into a recessed can or fixtures that block the sensor will not allow the bulbs to function properly.

Being that these bulbs operate on a photo sensor – glare or reflection from a fixture or light from another light source in close proximity can cause the bulbs to not function properly. The sensor must be exposed for the light to work properly.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble with your Dusk to Dawn bulb, here are some tips to make sure the bulb works as expected:

  • If your bulb isn’t behaving as it should:
    • Make sure that the bulb has constant power. The switch needs to be turned on all the time for these bulbs to function properly.
    • Make sure the bulb’s sensor is getting enough sunlight. Ensure the sensor faces the sun and is not obstructed by any objects. You can adjust the sensor location by slightly turning it clockwise or counterclockwise. Clean the sensor to remove any dirt, fingerprints, or marks, as a dirty sensor can cause it to stay on.
    • Test the sensor to ensure it’s working correctly. You can do this by covering the sensor with your finger or electrical tape. If the bulb turns on when it’s covered, like a regular light bulb, you know it’s working correctly. After testing, remove the tape and clean the sensor.
    • Make sure that there are only LED bulbs in the circuit. If the circuit mixes LED and incandescent light bulbs, the light may not function correctly.
    • If the bulb remains on during the day, it might not be receiving direct sunlight. This can happen if it’s installed in a shaded area, like under an eave or soffit or on overcast days.
  • If your bulb is flickering:
    • The sensor may be detecting reflections, causing the flickering. Try rotating the sensor slightly to see if it helps.
    • Make sure your fixture is not connected to an external Photocell, Motion Sensor, or Timer. Dusk to Dawn bulbs are not compatible with any digital or mechanical timer because they need constant power all the time to function correctly.
